5 Must Have Traits of a Mentor

As a Nurse Queen, it is essential for you to have a mentor. A mentor is someone who has been where you are and who can guide you along your journey to your desired destination. She will provide you with the step-by-step actions to take in order to get you to your determined goal. My first nurse mentor saved my nursing career.

The year was 2015 and I was experiencing Nurse Burnout, and I didn’t know it. I felt like something was off and I didn’t want to be a nurse anymore. I had one meeting with my nurse mentor who allowed me to share my feelings and she recommended me to get involved with shared governance. I started attending shared governance councils in my organization and fell in love with Nurse Leadership and NEVER looked back. Now here I am many years later, thriving in my career as nurse and I want the same for you Queen!

I must admit, you must be careful who you select as your Nurse Mentor. There are certain traits a Nurse Mentor must have for him/her to be beneficial to you. I offer you the following 5 must have traits of an effective Nurse Mentor:

  1. Active Listener- Your Nurse Mentor must be able to listen to what you need and allow you to have a safe space to share your experiences and desires.

  3. Attitude- Your Nurse Mentor must be positive! No negative nannies!
  4. Attuned- Your Nurse Mentor must be attuned to your needs.
